Slow Cooker Beef and Red Wine Stew

After receiving a slow cooker from my sister for Xmas, I'm eager to experiment with all types of soups, curries and maybe in whole meats. But I decided to start off with a stew, it was pretty easy to prepare and the slow cooker definitely makes everything easier. I'm quite a basic cook, but I was really impressed with how this turned out, so I thought I'd share my recipe for Beef and Red Wine Stew.

600g of beef
2 carrots- chopped
2 sticks of celery- chopped
1 onion chopped
100g/ cup of flour
Tin of chopped tomatoes
2 fresh tomatoes chopped (optional)
250ml beef stock
250ml red wine
2 tsp mixed herbs
1 tsp thyme (optional)
1 tsp marjoram (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste

To Make
- Coat the beef in flour, salt and pepper in a big bowl
- Brown beef in a frying pan, I did it in 2 batches as it was easier that struggling
- Add everything to the slow cooker and stir well to mix it all up.
- Cook for 4-5 hours on high or 8-9 on low. I cooked mine on high and checked after 4 hours and it was done to perfection.
- Serve in bowls with crusty bread and a nice glass of the leftover wine (hic!)

Tips and Tricks
-I coated the beef and fried it in two batches (coating the second as the first was frying)as it was easier that struggling and saved time.
- Its important to know that liquids don't evaporate in a slow cooker, so you don't have to worry about losing any and could lead to it being very alcoholic.

I also have a pinterest board for all my Slow Cooker inspiration if you'd like to check it out

I got this recipe from the booklet that came with my Slow Cooker, but changed it quite a bit,

  1. Oooh lovely, just the kind of recipe I like on a cold winter's night with some fluffy jacket spuds! I adore my slow cooker, it's so useful at this time of year. Curry, mulled wine, bolognese, soups... it's genius!

  2. Great minds! I'll be posting my beef stew later this week - such great comfort food for this chilly part of the year!

  3. This looks and sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing it with us, I'm hungry now! :)
